Starting a blog can be a daunting task at first, and believe me, it is.
We have built and maintain 3 blogs with great success. We have actually built many more, but the idea either wasn’t strong enough or we decided to roll it into one of our existing blogs. All it takes is an idea and the rest just follows order – or does it!
Our flagship blog is WesterlyLife.com – a lifestyle blog for Westerly, RI – that has articles about the area, extensive business directory and events calendar. That’s it! A blog is supposed to be that simple.
The hard part is adding the secret ingredient to make it successful. It’s a process that is extremely simple to apply in theory, but in reality it becomes difficult – extremely so at times. It is an ingredient that we all have and we can all harness, but seems to always be in short supply. Everyone and everything is constantly fighting for it, yet only a few people and even fewer items are going to get it. I’m talking about TIME!
Every successful blog on the Internet, has this seemingly simple concept in common – they have stood the test of time. They have consistently published entertaining and/or informative content and haven’t wavered too far form there original idea. Now of course, blogs evolve over time, but the original spirit remains at the heart of it all.
There are many, many check-boxes that need to be ticked in order to publish your first article and the process can seem daunting – and it is. Here is a short list of what you need to do to get ready for your new venture:
- come up with an idea – an idea that is part of a niche market is the best
- research a domain name – important part of your brand identity
- choose your publishing platform – we utilize WordPress for all of websites and blogs
- choose your web host – this is very important for the speed of your blog
- start designing your blog – start shopping for the look & feel of your blog
- start blogging!
Now this is not an exhaustive list by any means, and this shows you just the basics. This doesn’t include graphic design, content generation, troubleshooting, IT (yes, who else is going to fix your site when it’s down?), monetization, analytics, marketing, social media presence, search engine optimization, and…well, are you starting to see why you will need some help?
